Clare Valley Walking Tour Overview

Come to the Clare Valley and combine you love of hiking with that of delightful food, delicious wines and stunning accommodation.

This 2 day fully supported package is perfect for a weekend getaway.

If you love bush walking, great food, great wine and great accommodation, this is the getaway for you.

The Hiking

• There are 2 days hiking on the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail.
• Each day hiking is around 12km, however there is also a shorter version around 6km
• The terrain is moderate, it includes hills.
• The trail is mostly through farmland, bush along bushwalking trails.
• Guests should be fit and capable of walking these distances & have the appropriate clothing and gear.

The Accommodation

• This package uses Neagles Retreat Villas for the accommodation.
• Neagles retreat offers 1BR, 2BR and 3BR Villas, the Villas are in a country setting with great views only 5 minutes from the Clare Main Street
• Accommodation is based on;
  • 2 guests in a 1BR Villa
  • 4 guests in a 2BR Villa
  • 6 guests in a 3BR Villa
• Rooms can be set up as Twin or King
• If Neagles retreat is not available, we’ll come back to you with other options
• Check in to the property is 3pm and check out is 10am

The Food

• 2 Restaurant lunches are included;
  • Skillogalee
  • Pauletts
• Each restaurant provides lunch and a glass of wine. Extra can be purchased on the day if required.
• Breakfast and dinner is not included, there are 2 supermarkets in Clare where you can pick up supplies.
• Re dinner, there are multiple pubs and takeaway options, also most guests find the lunch to be more than enough as a main meal for the day and end having a smaller dinner in the villa with supplies they have sourced.

The Wine

• During the walks you will have the opportunity to stop in at Cellar Doors where you can do tastings.
• If you purchase wine along the way, there is no need to carry it, just leave it at Cellar Door and we can pick it up on the way home in the vehicle.
• A glass of wine is included during each lunch, and you are also welcome to do a tasting and buy wine from the restaurants.

The Transport

• On day 1 of this package we pick you up in the morning from your accommodation and drop you at the start of the hike
• We then pick you up after lunch and drop you back
• On day 2 you check out of the accommodation in the morning and drive to Pauletts, where you will leave your car.
• We pick you up from Pauletts and drop you at the start of the hike after lunch you simply locate your car.
• Our normal mode of transport is our luxury 7 seater Mercedes Benz.

Included in the package

• 2 nights accommodation at the Neagles Retreat Villas.
• Pauletts Restaurant lunch (with wine).
• Skillogalee Restaurant lunch (with wine).
• Pre hike briefings with map & GPS hiking App support.
• Private transport to and from hiking trail heads.
• Pick up of any wine purchases you make while hiking.

Not Included

• Please make your own way to the Clare Valley.
• Tasting fees payable direct at some wineries, normally redeemable on purchase.
• Breakfast (pick up supplies from 2 x local supermarkets)
• Dinner (there are multiple Pub, Restaurant & Takeaway options, many also opt for a light dinner as lunches are big)

Arrival into the Clare Valley

Make your way to the Clare Valley and drive straight to your accommodation.

On arrival we suggest grabbing some breakfast supplies from the local supermarkets, Clare has a Woolworths and Foodland IGA. Check in is from 3pm.

There are a couple of great places for dinner close by, the Sevenhill Hotel is the closest and has great food, if you book ahead ask to be seated in the Cellar.

Days 1 & 2. Hike the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

We start each day with a hike briefing, we get you set up with maps, a gps app if you want and run through the plan for the day.

Once sorted we will drop you at the start of the hike let you loose on the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail

Our standard 2 day package has you doing the Skillogalee walk on day 1 and the Pauletts walk on day 2.

It’s possible to swap these out with other walks and lunches, however we need to know well in advance so we can book the correct restaurant for your lunch.

If you re doing the longer version of the hikes we pick you up at 8.00am, if you are doing the shorter versions we pick you up at 9.30am

All gong to plan you will arrive at the restaurant at 1pm, where you are booked in for lunch, each restaurant offers something slightly different, however they all include a selection of food and a glass of wine.

We swing past in our vehicle and pick you up form the restaurant at 3pm and drop you back to your accommodation, if you made any wine purchases along the way we can stop off at these wineries to pick this up for you.

Spend the rest of the day chilling out in your villa.

About Your Hosts

Your local Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail hosts are Tim & Bianca Grigg.

Tim & Bianca have 2 decades of experience operating adventure tours all over Australia through their travel business, Travelwild Australia Pty Ltd, which operates tours from the Clare Valley to the Kimberley and everything in between.

Both Tim & Bianca have been heavily involved in building the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail (CVWWT). Tim is Chairman and Bianca is on the committee, The Clare Valley Walk is also a corporate sponsor of the trail.

In addition to operating walking tours, Travelwild Australia also also operates Clare Valley Wine Tours, so we know a thing or two about the beautiful wine coming out of the Clare Valley as well. Importantly both Tim & Banca are a keen hikers and have lived in the Clare Valley for over 20 years.

Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail (CVWWT)

The trail you will be walking on is the CVWWT, the trail is the brain child of local Doctor, Michael Nugent. Michael has banded together a bunch of locals who work hard to make it happen. Started in 2020 and completed in 2024, the trail is 105 km in length and mostly uses private property, over 50 individual landholders have agreed the have the trail pass through their properties.
