We have just completed the three day walk and everything about the experience was wonderful!! Tim and Bianca were wonderful hosts and guides - they were so thoughtful and shared interesting anecdotes about the local area and environment. The lodge was very, very comfortable and lovely to go back to at the end of the walking day! We highly recommend this experience 😀

This is an amazing walk where you see a cross section of the environment along with the rest of cheese, biscuits and wine for morning tea. What could be better!! Tim and Bianca are very knowledgeable and experienced in walking and the local area. What we learnt you could not of learnt self guided. The lodge was beautiful and extremely comfortable along with each night a tasty local meal from one of the top quality restaurants with wine to accompany it. The walk is no means hard but ensure you can walk 12km a daily. I would highly recommend this walk/ experience to anyone and as Tim says you don’t have to enjoy wine to join. The gin is very good too!!

What hospitable, knowledgeable and caring support from the wonderful Bianca and Tim, our friendly hosts and guides. Such an accomplished pair! Especially recall the day we endured Noah-like rain and Bianca called for late-morning rescue from a dry Tim who arrived swiftly to take us to start the drying process and allow us a change of clothes before a fabulous gin tasting. Accommodation in their beautiful lodge was clean and extremely comfortable for the four people we had on our trek. Yes, there were some tramping ups and downs but we (65 and 72 years young) managed with warm patience from the group. Breakfast was do it yourself with plenty of options. Lunch was a delicious gourmet surprise at a winery or ritzy pub, wine accompanying. Dinner was delivered each night from another local gourmet establishment with a favourite wine or two from each day's 2-3 tastings (so clever!) We were NEVER hungry or under-refreshed! We walked from breakfast to lunchtime through the undulating pleasure of Clare's ridges and valleys. Afternoons were to ourselves for scrolling, snoozing, chatting or, as was our want, reading (accompanied by a refreshing beverage). Wonderful time with wonderful people ... and the occasional wine!

We couldn’t be more satisfied; girls weekend away. We were in alternative accommodation that had been arranged for us - absolutely outstanding, exceeded the needs of our group. Bianca went out of her way to accommodate our group with different needs, and was so reflexive with our changing plans to make sure we had the rest we needed. Best food and wine weekend in a long time! Thank you for a lovely, restorative weekend

10/10 for an expertly curated and organised 5-day experience hosted by a warm and wonderful team - Tim and Bianca. As a group of four from Melbourne, we found it all worked perfectly - the lodge, the planning for the walks, the balance between wine tastings, walking, dining out for lunch and dining in for dinners, and the overall professional but personal approach of our hosts. Each day was structured to work for the given weather conditions, the walking route, and the accommodation of varied wine tastings and dining experiences. This is perfect for people who love a relaxing break that provides a mix of fairly gentle outdoors activity, good food and wine in a beautiful setting. We walked in October and the weather conditions during the days varied fairly wildly from hot (around 29 celcius) to cold (around 8 celcius) - Tim and Bianca organised our days to fit the conditions, and there was always the great option to take a day off walking and stay at the lodge. While the trail is a little hilly, this is not difficult walking and should be easily managed for anyone who is moderately fit and mobile.

Food

Great food is a big part of the experience. Our aim is to keep you well fuelled with plenty of fresh, healthy and locally sourced food throughout the tour, while also giving you the opportunity to experience some of the Clare Valley’s best dining.

Breakfast

We provide two breakfasts during the tour, with everything you need supplied at the lodge so you can prepare breakfast at your leisure before we pick you up for the day’s walk.

Think fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, muesli, oats, fresh bread, eggs, tea and coffee – simple, healthy and delicious, with an emphasis on fresh and locally sourced produce.

Lunch

We supply 3 lunches on this tour, 1 x catered picnic lunch and 2 restaurant lunches provided by Pikes and Skillogalee

Pikes Slate Restaurant

One of our lunches is at the beautiful Slate Restaurant at Pikes Wines. Pikes is one of the Clare Valley’s most celebrated wineries, known throughout Australia for its exceptional Riesling and other premium wines.

Relax after the morning’s walk and enjoy your choice of main course accompanied by a glass of Pikes wine.

Skillogalee Restaurant

We also enjoy lunch at Skillogalee’s Barrel Hall. Skillogalee has been a Clare Valley food and wine institution for decades and, under new ownership, has taken its dining experience to another level.

Set amongst the vineyards on the banks of Skillogalee Creek in the picturesque Skilly Valley, it’s a beautiful place to settle in for a long lunch. We enjoy a set menu with a choice of dishes, accompanied by a glass of Skillogalee wine.

Dinner

We provide two dinners during the tour, freshly prepared by local restaurants and delivered to the lodge for you to enjoy together.

Over the years, our guests have told us that after a full day of walking and a leisurely lunch, they love being able to relax at the lodge rather than dress up and head out to another restaurant.

So that’s exactly what we do. Put your ugg boots on, open a bottle of Clare Valley wine and enjoy a delicious dinner in the comfort of the lodge while to open fire crackles in the background.

Antidote Kitchen

Located in the heart of Clare, Antidote Kitchen brings together the flavours of the Clare Valley with an eclectic mix of Indian and international influences. Led by award-winning chef Rupesh Agrawal, Antidote has become a popular local dining destination, known for flavour-packed dishes, relaxed hospitality and creative fusion cuisine.

The kitchen has a strong focus on fresh produce and local ingredients, complemented by a carefully selected range of boutique Clare Valley wines. From traditional Indian flavours to contemporary Australian favourites, the menu offers something a little different while celebrating the produce and wines of the region—a great place to relax after a day exploring the Clare Valley.

Ragu & Co Restaurant

Another dinner is catered by Ragù & Co. This local Italian Restaurant brings a genuine taste of Italy to the heart of Clare. Owners Romolo and Sabrina draw on memories of growing up in Italy, creating traditional, uncomplicated Italian food using fresh South Australian produce, including locally sourced Clare Valley ingredients. Handmade pizzas, gnocchi and slow-cooked ragù showcase the flavours and traditions of Italian family cooking.

Their authenticity has been recognised with the prestigious Ospitalità Italiana accreditation, awarded by the Italian Government and Italian Chamber of Commerce, as well as Best Italian Restaurant – Clare Valley Region 2023 and Most Authentic Italian Restaurant – South Australia 2024.

Wine

Many of our guests enjoy wine, while others don’t drink at all. The Clare Valley’s premium wines are certainly a highlight for those with an interest in wine, but they’re by no means essential to enjoying the tour. Many of our guests simply come for the beautiful walking, exceptional food, comfortable accommodation and the chance to experience the Clare Valley.

During our walks, you can stop at several wineries where you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a tasting if you wish. A glass of Clare Valley wine is also included with our restaurant lunches.

You can purchase wine for the evenings from wineries as you pass.

Itinerary

  • Walking: 12km
  • Lunch: Catered Picnic Lunch
  • Tasting: Eldredge Wines & Jeaneret Wines
  • Dinner: Antidote Kitchen (Heat & Serve in the Lodge)

The Clare Valley Wine Region lies just 1.5 hours drive North of Adelaide, located in in the northern reaches of the Mt Lofty Ranges, the Clare Valley is dotted with small boutique wineries, stunning rural landscapes, large tracts of native bush and some of the best food and wine on offer anywhere in the Country.

Our goal over the next 3 days is for you to sample it all by combining our love for all things Clare Valley with our love for hiking and walking.

After a quick stop in Clare for a local tea / coffee, we head straight for the start the Clare Valley Wine & Wilderness Trail. This 110km hiking trail meanders through the rural and wilderness landscapes of the Clare Valley, emerging to walk past 26 cellar door, multiple restaurants, cafes and pubs.

Todays walk is about 12km in length and forms part of stage 2 of the trail, utilising backroads, private property and the Spring Gully Conservation Park, it’s a moderate grade with a few hills thrown in to test us out (and provide some great views).

There is a great morning tea stop at Eldredge wines, where you can also do a tasting if you like.

We have a great spot on private property where you can have lunch. You can crank the campfire up and make a cup of tea and enjoy your lunch with one of the best views in the region.

The walking ends when you arrive at Jeanneret Wines where, if you like you can do a wine tasting.

We’ll then make our way to your accommodation.

From here you can kick back in the lodge, get the fire going and open some of those bottles you have purchased throughout the day. Your evening meal, catered by local restaurant Antidote Kitchen, is in the fridge and just needs heating up.

Today you tackle stage 1 of the CVWWT, we have a 10km trek starting on the exposed lofty heights of the Dunns Range and finishing on the floor of the Valley amoung giant gums on the banks of the Hutt River.

Along the way you can drop into the Clare Valley Distillery (opened in early 2025) for a refreshing Gin or Tim Adams Wines for a tasting (or both if you are keen).

Our first stop on the walk after about 3km is the CVWWT hikers hut perched on top of the range, this privately owned hut provides shelter from winter winds and summer sun and can be used by trail walkers as a rest stop. We suggest you stop her for your morning tea break. We have gear on site for you to make a cuppa.

You then push southward and remain on the exposed ridge for another few km, this is one of the highest elevations you’ll reach over the 3 days at around 560 metres above sea level, the views are also amoung some of the best you’ll get, with the Dunns range separating the Clare Valley from the Polish Hill River Valley you gain a great perspective of the whole region and can see most of the areas where you will spend your time exploring the Clare Valley.

After an hour or so you reach the charming Village of Sevenhill, a stop at the bakery for morning tea is highly recommended.

The walk continues onto the Historic Sevenhill Cellars, the Clare Valley’s first and oldest winery, established by Jesuits escaping religious persecution in Poland 1851, the property is full of history and you have plenty of time to check out the numerous buildings, including the vaulted ceiling cellar and church crypt, and of course you cannot leave without tasting a little of their produce, those into fortified wine will enjoy Sevenhill’s expertise in this area.

From Sevenhill Cellars you head up and over the Dunns range through beautiful farmland and into the Polish Hill River Valley where you can locate the Pikes Slate Restaurant and sit down for well deserved lunch with wine.

Set on the banks of the Hill River, the Modern Pikes Slate Winery / Restaurant is one of Clare’s best and will not disappoint.
